Introduction
We created a new vision for the city centre of Barking, East London. The work included complex master planning and organisation of public realm, including flows through spaces, new massing and facade recommendations, and the introduction of iconic new landmarks to anchor the civic realm.
The design challenge
Enhance the center's civic character and establish a unified spatial identity while prioritising human well-being. Address pressing concerns such as public health and climate change, integrating them seamlessly into the site's transformation.
The design soution
The Civic Centre will expand active civic life from the East Street Market through to the rest of the block, enhance connectivity East-West and North-South, and establish key landmarks and places along the way. We respect and reframe old landmarks like the Magistrate’s Court, the Town Hall, the Curfew Tower, and the Old Granary on Town Quay.
At the same time, we introduced three new Beacons that share the same architectural and lighting language: the New Market Hall, the Abbey Green Beacon, and the Town Quay Beacon.
Together, these landmarks define a clear and memorable visual identity for Barking.
The major anchor building on Clockhouse Avenue incorporates a covered public atrium and retail and workshops on the ground level. The design incorporates logistics handling for the market as well as defining the important urban edges of the city.
