Introduction
DaeWha Kang Design emerged as finalists for a competition to create a feature marking the mountain bike trailhead at Kielder Castle. Titled "Gateway", our iconic timber sculpture serves as a visual marker near Kielder Castle visitor center, a hub for Forestry England's renowned mountain bike trails. Much like the Torii gates in Japan marking the transition from the mundane to the sacred, the sculpture was conceptualised as the threshold between the outer world and the forest, the intersection of high-energy sport and natural tranquility. It incorporates the vitality of mountain biking into its composition, building on our prior experience with timber, exemplified by the Circe sculpture. "Gateway" not only engages visitors with Kielder Forest's unique environment but also showcases how artists and architects can create extraordinary ways to experience and interact with natural landscapes.
