Introduction
The founder of Vedanta wanted to create a remarkable place to host visitors coming to see him. At the same time, he needed an event space and digital town hall to connect his 100,000 employees in London and around the world. As much as a company headquarters, this would be a spiritual home and nexus for the organisation. The final design has elements of spiritual atmosphere while also incorporating radical flexibility and advanced technology.
The design challenge
Design an exceptional and distinctive interior environment within the constraints of a compact floor space in Central London. Harmonize the seemingly conflicting objectives of cultivating a spiritual ambiance, accommodating versatile multipurpose functionality, serving as a corporate headquarters, and providing an intimate and welcoming hospitality area.
The design soution
The central access hall for these cabins posed a challenge. How should we create a sense of grandeur and arrival despite the limited ceiling height and plan area? We imagined a 21st century Hall of Mirrors, interpreted in reflective partitions and futuristic Corian details. The effect creates an endless expanse of luminous space.
A series of skyfold partitions can disappear into the ceiling, allowing individual cabins to combine into larger meeting or dining rooms. Other partitions fold away into the back wall and the entire space can open up into a banquet or lecture hall for more than 150 people.
The space plan was organised to make best use of cellular spaces while also providing maximum flexibility. Seven visitor “cabins” open off the main entry hall, while the chairman’s reception and office occupies the corner of the plan.
The client named his company Vedanta, meaning ultimate wisdom in Hindi. Taking inspiration from the Bhagavad-Gita, we developed a language of moons and sun sculpted from an abstract white ceiling. Textures and articulations dissolve from Corian detailing into luminous discs of shifting colour.
